Bill W. on the GSR

"The strength of our whole A.A. service structure starts with the group and with the General Service Representative (GSR) the group elects. I cannot emphasize too strongly the GSR's importance.

"By choosing its most qualified man or woman as GSR, a group helps secure its own future — and the future of A.A. as a whole."

When You're a GSR

You are linking your home group with the whole of A.A.

Back in 1953, when the "group contact" was suggested as a new type of trusted servant, the job was seen as simply a good means of exchanging up-to-date information between individual groups and "Headquarters" (now the General Service Office). That's still an important side of your work.

But now, as a General Service Representative, you have an even bigger responsibility: You transmit ideas and opinions, as well as facts; through you, the group conscience becomes part of the "collective conscience" of our whole Fellowship," as expressed in the General Service Conference.

Like everything else in A.A., it works through a series of simple steps. (For the complete picture in detail, read The A.A. Service Manual .)

 GSR Preamble

(We read this at the opening of General Service meetings)

"We are the General Service Representatives. We are the link in the chain of communication for our groups with the General Service Conference and the world of A.A. We realize that the ultimate authority in A.A. is a loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience.

"As trusted servants, our job is to bring information to our groups in order that the group can reach an informed group conscience. Passing along this group conscience, we are helping to maintain the unity and strength so vital to our fellowship.

"Let us, therefore, have the patience and tolerance to listen while others share, the courage to speak up when we have something to share, and the wisdom to do what is right for our groups and A.A. as a whole."

Responsibility Pledge

(We say this at the close of General Service meetings)

"I am responsible ...
When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of A.A. always to be there. And for that, I am responsible."

GENERAL SERVICE
DISTRICT 22

ABOUT THIS WEB SITE

District 22 develops and maintains this site, in accordance with our district's purpose (stated below) and A. A. principles.  We work closely with the local Intergroup and other A.A. committees serving the Western Slope to develop all web content.  Our collective goal is to carry the A.A. message and to inform both A.A. members and the public of the A.A. events and services that are available locally.  For contact information or questions about this site, see the District Subcommittee section below.

District 22's Service Purpose

We hold regular monthly meetings in an effort to:

  • Carry the A.A. message to the alcoholic who still suffers.
  • Educate our general membership about the Steps, Traditions, and Concepts of A.A.
  • Provide a forum for the exchange of information between our district organization and any other A.A. service groups or committees.
  • To assist the DCM and GSRs in discharging their responsibilities as outlined in the A.A. Service Manual.
  • Form subcommittees as necessary to carry out our purpose and to receive monthly reports.
  • Disburse 7th Tradition funds received from groups as necessary to carry out our purposes on their behalf and be self-supporting.

General Service district positions have a 2-year term.  For District 22, we hold panel-wide elections in November of every odd-number year.   Each newly elected panel takes office on January 1 of the next even-numbered year.  This allows an orientation period and a smooth transition of responsibilities to the new panel.

District Archives

Chair:   Toni S    [ email Archives ]

District Grapevine Committee

Chair:   (vacant)   [ email Grapevine ]

This district committee is dedicated to raising awareness of the the AA Grapevine, which is the international journal of Alcoholics Anonymous, and of the the many valuable Grapevine publications. Written, edited, illustrated, and read by AA members and others interested in the AA program of recovery from alcoholism, the Grapevine is a lifeline linking one alcoholic to another.

Widely known as a "meeting in print," the AA Grapevine communicates the experience, strength, and hope of its contributors and reflects a broad geographic spectrum of current AA experience with recovery, unity, and service. Founded in 1944, the Grapevine does not receive group contributions, but is supported entirely through magazine subscription sales and additional income derived from the sale of Grapevine items.

The AA Grapevine publication is available at A.A. meetings, for a nominal fee per issue. Past issues, when available, are typically free at Western Slope A.A. meetings. (You can also read the AA Grapevine online for free.)

Our Liaisons with Local A.A Services

To ensure a continuous exchange of A.A. service information, a liaison representing each local A.A. service committee attends our district meetings. The following committees are described in more detail on the Local A.A. services page:

California Northern Interior Area (CNIA) 07

An A.A. "area" is a geographical division within a state or province. A general service conference delegate comes from an Area. In California, there are six (6) Areas — and these Areas are in turn part of the Pacific Region of A.A.

CNIA is comprised of 27 general service districts, which includes two Spanish-linguistic districts. District and Area boundaries can often bisect county lines. Generally speaking, the CNIA covers 25 non-coastal counties of Northern California, from Oregon state line on the north, down to Kings and Tulare counties on the south.
