 Pettiness Prayer

(We read this at the opening of Intergroup meetings)

"Keep us, oh God, from pettiness, Let us be large in thought, in word, in deed. Let us be done with fault finding and leave off self-seeking.

"May we put away all pettiness and meet each other face-to-face, without self-pity & without prejudice.

"May we always be patient, never hasty in judgment and always tolerant. Let us take time for all things; make us calm, serene and gentle.

"Grant that we may realize it is the little things in life that create differences, that in the big things of life we are as one & may we strive to touch & to know the great common heart of us all.

"And, oh God, let us not forget to be kind."

Serenity Prayer

(We say this at the close of Intergroup meetings)

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Intergroup "Wallet Card"

Intergroup provides A.A. members with this handy wallet-sized card, free of charge. Pick one up at any Western Slope A.A. meeting.

Intergroup's "Birthday Plan"

Many A.A. members across the country are sharing their sobriety Birthday Celebration with others by giving a monetary contribution (usually one dollar per year of sobriety) to their local Intergroup.

This insures that the same help that they received will be available to others that are new to the Fellowship.

Start this year, and make it an annual event. It is not how much you give that is important. It's thinking of others on your special day that makes it so special.

If you are truly grateful for your sobriety, this is really a wonderful way to express your gratitude by helping others receive the blessing of sobriety.

Please make your check or money order to West Slope Intergroup. (And mention your number of years of sobriety or you will be listed as anonymous.)

Mail your contribution in our specially designed Birthaday Plan envelopes available at Western Slope A.A. meetings, or use your own and mail to:

Practical Experience Shows...

"Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail."

(From the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, page 89)

INTERGROUP OF
ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
WESTERN SLOPE

Intergroup's Purpose and Services

This Intergroup is an A.A. service office that involves partnership among groups in our community—just as A.A. groups themselves are partnerships of individuals.

This Intergroup was established to carry out certain functions common to all the groups—functions which are best handled by this Intergroup—which is supervised and supported by these groups in their general interest. It exists to aid the groups in their common purpose to carrying the A.A. message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

The purpose of this group shall be to act as a unifying force among the groups of Alcoholics Anonymous on the Western Slope using all the A.A. Traditions as guidelines. This area should encompass the area from Pollock Pines to El Dorado Hills, with a Northern boundary of Georgetown and a Southern boundary of Somerset.

The duties of this Intergroup are to provide services that the individual groups of Alcoholics Anonymous would not be adequately able to provide without unity. This shall include, but not be limited to:

  • Community-wide A.A. services, including Teleservice, Tape & CD Library and Public Informaton/Cooperation with the Professional Community (PI/CPC), as detailed in the "Intergroup Committees" section below.
  • Meeting directories: at regular intervals, Intergroup may publish and distribute up-to-date meeting schedules, which will include new meetings (3 month requirement), address changes, type of meeting, wheelchair access meeting, etc. The directory will also include the name, date, time, and location of Intergroup and other service meetings. This directory will not include group activities and special events.
  • A.A. newsletter:  The preparation of an A.A. publication for periodic distribution to A.A. groups about A.A. activities is about A.A. and A.A. information on the Western Slope. This committee will provide guidelines to the Intergrouprepresentatives for approval.
  • Intergroup postal box:  Handle all the mail inquiries received in the Intergroup-maintained Post Office Box, routing them to the proper committee or individual for handling.
  • Information exchange:   Intergroup may function as a clearinghouse for the circulation and exchange of information among all the A.A. groups in the community. Intergroup will provide information on conferences, workshops, seminars which are received in the Intergroup mail box.
  • Unity events:  This committee will put together workshops to promote service and other activities that carry the message to the Alcoholic who still suffers. The accepted definition of an A.A. event is an event put on by A.A. members for A.A. members about A.A. (definition from GSO).

Trusted Servants of Intergroup

Any group within our service area wishing to affiliate with Intergroup may do so simply by observing the 12 Traditions and designating one of their group members as their Intergroup Representative. It is good practice to also name a second person as their alternate. It is suggested that A.A. members be elected who show a desire to be of service and are willing to carry out their obligation to the best of their ability in the spirit of unity and cooperation.

Intergroup Subcommittees

Public Information/Cooperation with the
Professional Community (PI/CPC)

Chair:   Rocklin W                            [ email PI/CPC ]

Public Information and Cooperation with the Professional Community are two A.A. service committee functions that Intergroup Western Slope combines into a single operating subcommittee of our Intergroup.

The Public Information function is to let the general public, and more importantly the alcoholic still suffering know where help is available. The function of Cooperation with the Professional Community (CPC) is to work in the professional community (i.e., doctors, nurses, judges and attorneys) to inform them about Alcoholics Anonymous.

Our PI/CPC committee members attend various conferences and meetings of these professionals upon request, and it organizes a speaker pool to provide A.A. member speakers to schools and other institutions requesting them. Other activities can include:  Placement and airing of television and radio public service announcements on local stations; placement of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous and other A.A. literature in public libraries, as well as many schools.

Teleservice (24-hour A.A. Hotline)

Chair:   Craig R                               [ email Teleservice ]
Alt. Chair:     Chris C

Teleservice provides complete and accurate 24-hour telephone service, directing incoming calls to A.A. members who have volunteered to serve. Teleservice handles A.A. related phone inquiries and, when appropriate, distributes requests for help from sick alcoholics to local A.A. volunteers who follow up with further Twelfth Step work. Teleservice is also responsible for maintaining "Alcoholics Anonymous" listings in local telephone directories.

Tape & CD Librarian

Chair:   Bob E                                 [ email Tape Librarian ]

The Tape & CD Librarian collects, and makes available by request, various A.A. related audiovisual materials of interest to A.A. members, and presents demonstrations at local A.A. meetings if requested.

Our Liaisons with Local A.A Services

To ensure a continuous exchange of A.A. service information, a liaison representing each local A.A. service committee attends our district meetings. The following committees are described in more detail by clicking on the links given:

H & I
Hospitals and Institutions

Chair:  Otto B

[ email H & I ]

The Hospitals & Institutions (H & I) committee is responsible for starting and carrying on meetings, and for providing Big Books and other literature and information, to correctional facilities, treatment facilities, and non-profit or state run institutions.

H & I receives its funds from the "pink cans" circulated during A.A. meetings, and these member donations help pay for the literature H & I distributes.

State-run facilities are furnished some literature at no charge. Most of the suffering alcoholics in these institutions would otherwise have no access to the program of Alcoholics Anonymous.

If you are interested in volunteering for this service work, it is necessary to undergo an orientation class and background check to ob- tain the clearance needed to enter local jails. H & I offers these orien- tation sessions twice per year.

For more information, please contact the Chairperson or attend the next H & I meeting (see below) for more information.

H & I Meetings

H & I meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month, except in the months of November and December.

Time:        6 p.m.
Location:  Mother Lode Fellowship
                   5850 Mother Lode Dr.
                   Placerville, Calif.

More About Intergroup

Who can attend Intergroup meetings?
Intergroup business meetings are open to any A.A. member. Even if you have no vote, you have a right to voice your opinion. Observing often and in as many different set- tings as possible can make you a more informed member.

What does an Intergroup Rep do?
Here's how it works. The Intergroup Rep is selected by his/her group. He/she and attends the monthly business meetings, making sure to bring suggestions, commments and opinions from his/her group.

The Rep will also take information back to the group, such as new flyers, announcements, meeting schedules, etc. The Intergroup Rep should always be present to cast his/her vote on all matters requiring a group conscience. Through regu- lar Intergroup meeting attendance and participation, the Rep helps his/ her group stay involved in keeping A.A. on the Western Slope healthy and active.

In summary, the key purpose of the Intergroup Rep is to be a link in the chain, connecting individual A.A. members of his/her group to the resources of those operating Inter- group services on behalf of all A.A. groups in the community.

What are the qualifications of an Intergroup Rep?
Each individual A.A. group deter- mines the qualifications for its Intergroup Rep. However, experi- ence has shown us that both the group and A.A. as a whole are best served by selecting an Intergroup Rep having at least one (1) year of continuous sobriety and who is able to serve for at least one (1) year.

The Intergroup Committee also provides all its Reps with a "Purpose, Duties and Procedures" guide to help everyone quickly learn the roles and responsibilities of serving their groups as Intergroup Reps.
